A Slow Hike Doesn’t Have to be a Bad Thing – Hawn State Park
Today was the first official day for teachers, so Katie and I decided we needed to squeeze in a quick hike last night. It became a sort of scouting hike for another short beginner hike that we could do but it was also a little more. It wasn’t our normal have the best time and push ourselves hike but instead a slower paced relaxing hike.
We were off to a late start because we worked then Katie went to Crossfit and then decided she still had time and the energy for a hike with me. It was a short drive to Hawn State Park where we decided to try the Pickle Springs Trail and then crossover onto Whispering Pine’s North Loop. It ended being just over a 2 mile hike and a much slower pace than we are used to doing (about 32 minutes per mile).
The slower pace may be just what we needed or at least what I needed. Getting back into the school groove can be hectic and fast-paced and this certainly slowed us down. The pace was slower due to a rocky terrain and several down trees over the path which was even a little more difficult for Katie who was packing Oakley.
The slower pace allowed us to talk and have that “girl time.” Katie is “my person” (with Gina a close second) for all you Grey’s Anatomy’s fans. When I need to vent or sort through some situations, Katie is my go to. We listen to each other non-judgmentally and are ready for the call to action if needed.
I didn’t have any major issues last night but it was still nice to talk through some things and just prepare ourselves for the year ahead. It was relaxing. A nice slow hike next to the trickling creek and even a little wild life when we startled a deer.
Every hike doesn’t have to be a race for the best time or that heart pumping workout. Sometimes the slower pace is just what is needed. The tranquility of the woods and the companionship of a good friend can be better than any medicine at certain times.
So I guess what I am saying is that even as competitive person, I need to remember it isn’t always about the pace, the best time, or any other stats. Sometimes just being there in the moment with “your person” is all that is needed.
Find time and allow yourself to take that slower-paced hike and if it is with “your person” that is even better.

Awww! I love being “your person”. We’ve gotten each other through a lot over the years! I’m glad that we have taken this step into “Adventuring” together. We’ve already done so much and we are just getting started!!
Me too. There’s no one else I would want to adventure with!
